February is considered the month of the heart. Not only is it American Heart Month, but it’s also when we celebrate our love of others.
With so much talk about Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, people turn their attention to giving a little extra TLC to their loved ones or even to their hearts.
But maybe you should set aside some time to give some love to your career – especially if you aren’t living your passion.
It’s time to ask yourself:
- Do I get up each day, eager to head to work and face the challenges that a new workday brings?
- Do I enjoy the chatter of people busy at work as I walk in the door? Do I love the variety of tasks that each day brings?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, consider yourself one of the lucky few. If you answered no, continue to dig deep and ask yourself:
- Do I need a greater challenge or possibly a promotion with my current employer?
- Do I need a change because I find it difficult to get out of bed and go to work each day?
- Do I hate my job because I’ve been doing the same thing for the last 10, 20, 30 years?
Perhaps the constant demands put upon you by society, your family, what have you, have made you lose your playfulness and your ability to dream. Perhaps you’ve been beaten down by the same routine – day after day after day, and feel ‘stuck’.
But is this really the way you want to spend the rest of your life? Do you want to look back in 10 – or even 30 – years and wish you had done things differently? Of course, you don’t.
So let’s think about changing your course. You can start the analysis of your career needs with the following Outcomes Questions. Ask yourself these 5 ‘dig deep’ questions:
- What do I have in my career that I no longer want?
- What do I not have in my career that I do want?
- What patterns have I noticed in my career path to-date (include positive and negative patterns)?
- What needs to change?
- How will I go about making the change?
If you don’t wake up each day with an eagerness to get to work, it might be time to take a deeper look at what it would take to work in a field that you are passionate about.
