Be the Boss of Your Career

Untitled design(1)

Are you going through the motions, getting up each morning and heading to work – not giving it much thought about whether you could be having more fun or doing better? Do you feel ‘stuck’ in your current J.O.B (Just Over Broke) or career? Is each day feeling like groundhog day? Has the confidence you once had a long distant memory.

If you are content and happy with the way your career is going, the following thoughts won’t apply to you. However, if you answered yes to any of the above questions, then keep reading for some TIPS to move from ‘stuck’ to ‘stardom’ in your career.

I am an avid believer in designing your destiny. If you don’t carve out your plan for success, you will end up being part of fulfilling someone else’s plan for theirs. So now is a better time than ever to stop sitting back and waiting for things to change. You must step up to the plate, take the lead and make things happen.

There are a plethora of opportunities available for us to embrace. Currently, they are only limited by the roadblocks we put in front of ourselves.

Maybe it’s time to thoroughly evaluate where you are and where you want to go. By starting this process, you are taking the lead and making the decisions that put you in a place of personal power. You are Becoming the Boss of Your Career.

Consider these scenarios that keep us feeling ‘stuck’:

  • If you are totally burnt out with what you are doing, it might be time to identify and develop a new career path. What would you love to do? What would excite you? Do you need to learn new skills to work in a career you will enjoy or are your skills transferable?
  • If you’ve been passed over for a promotion, maybe you need to take the first step, instead of waiting for a higher-level job to be handed to you. That may mean you need to go back to school, sign up for a class or dedicate time to learn a new talent. It’ll be worth the effort if it means you can progress in your career.
  • Has your company been acquired, merged or restructured, requiring you to meet new performance standards in order to keep your job? It can be a scary process when your company is acquired or merged with another. If you hope to keep your job, put yourself out there. Let the new corporate leaders know who you are and what you can do. Don’t wait for them to decide where to put you. As humans, our natural response is to go into ‘survival mode’ – and productivity flounders. Be aware of this and harness your skills/abilities to make the most of the current situation, whether you are making yourself a valuable asset to your organization or moving to new pastures.
  • Have you taken a few years off and now wonder how on earth you can return to the workforce? Again, this can be a scary and intimidating situation for many individuals, mostly women who have dedicated years to caring for their families and now want to return to the workforce.

If you find yourself in a situation like any of those mentioned above, you haven’t been singled out. In fact, most people face at least one of these dilemmas at some point before they retire.

The key here is to not sit back and wait for something to happen. Instead, you need to take charge. You need to take the lead to decide what lies for you ahead.

Write down your strengths and weaknesses. Write down your ideas for a new career path or the type of work you’d love to do.

That’s the start in this exciting and exhilarating process of self discovery.

If you need a helping hand, there are an abundance of resources available, including career coaches and books like Start With Why by Simon Sinek (Amazon Link to Book). This is must-read for all those embarking on life/career changing events. It is one of my favorites to dig into the ‘why’ behind decisions.
